Take Care of Today to Secure Tomorrow

Executives (humans) have a tendency to spend more time than necessary thinking about tomorrow. While it is not unusual to worry about something that may or may not happen in the future, our best actions are based on today’s situations.

We do need to have a sense of direction and an eye on the “end goal”, but we get far better results tomorrow if we tend to today’s reality.

Don’t bother trying to control!

Predict.

Wanting to know the result of an action before its time is unattainable.

We silently vacillate between:

  • Looking for the future results
  • Wanting (need for) control
  • The desire to eliminate uncertainty

These are all ingredients for a staying right where you are – little forward progress.

Do invest in increased expectations for today.

The very best method and one which you can control every day, is to focus all your attention and high expectations and your view of what you most want today. When you do this consistently, the future will mirror that view.

Be sure that you do not allow yourself to see problems, fears or disappointment “out there”. Stay with today as your working material and seed bed.

In other words, the future always takes care of itself. As long as you do what’s needed today, you will be able to trust the future.

Double focus.

If you do try this process, be sure to separate what your expectations are for the company from the expectations you have for yourself as leader (purpose, passion and self direction) The idea is that you are more important than the role.

Let me know how you approach this and the insights you gain.
